Once a penal colony, then one of Australia's largest shipping yards, Cockatoo Island is a little piece of history preserved in the heart of the Sydney Harbour. You can camp there, party there, rent commercial space there or walk just around the corner and feel miles away in a sudden eery silence. Stairways lead to non existent floors, doors don't open anymore, tunnels crisscross the island and windows are shattered from long long ago. The wind whistles as it blows, walkways feel damp underfoot and shadows cast all around. This is Cockatoo Island.
